This second most popular name in the UK ~ borne by some 200,000 families, plus an estimated 400,000 in the USA and British Commonwealth ~ means "son of John" and is predominantly Welsh in origin, although now widespread Jones is from the Welsh "loan" ~ the word for John in the Welsh Authorised Version of the Bible ~ and John itself became a leading christian name in the early 1300's.
